Using that scripture, Rev. Wright made specific illustrations of the "gates of Hell" that would not prevail against Trinity Church of Christ, naming names.
How did Rev. Wright's comments get on national television within a span of 24 hours? How did the news media know that Rev. Wright would be speaking at Trinity Church of Christ? How did they get a copy of the video tape of the service so quickly? Is Trinity Church of Christ under media surveillance?
Regardless of how one feels about Rev. Jeremiah Wright and/or his infamous comments, it is safe to say that there is something wrong going on within the media relative to Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Trinity Church of Christ. Why is what goes on at Trinity Church of Christ news that warrants national attention? Barack Obama is no longer a member of that church. Why would anyone care what goes on there now?
Although I don't agree with Rev. Wright's comments about singing God Damn America, I do believe in the right of free speech. I also believe that Rev. Wright and Trinity Church of Christ are under media surveillance because Rev. Wright had the AUDACITY to speak out boldly against the media. Members of the media, in particular the television media, are free to say whatever they want over the airways (subject to the rules and regulations of the FCC), and viewers are powerless to talk back (in real time). Day after day, viewers are bombarded with commentary an opinions from media personnel that viewers may deem anywhere from slightly annoying to offensive. Unfortunately, except for changing the channel on the television set, viewers have no recourse to get relief from such oppression.
Enter Rev. Wright. He speaks his mind. Now members of the media are getting a taste of their own medicine. Here is a man who speaks his convictions and the media is powerless to do anything about it! For all of their airing of video clips of Rev. Wright, people still want to hear him speak! Rev. Wright has a voice in America and people want to listen to what he has to say.
I have not heard everything Rev. Wright has said. I am not familiar with all of his political views. It is safe to say that much of what he says I may not agree with. However, I do appreciate his boldness to speak his mind in the face of opposition from the media. I do hope he continues to speak his views - whether I agree with him or not.
By the way, regarding Matthew 16:18, Rev. Jeremiah Wright was right. The gates of Hell will never prevail against any Church - and that includes Trinity Church of Christ. The Church belongs to Jesus Christ who bought and paid for it with His own blood. If there are any problems within the Church, He and He alone will take care of it in His own way. The world is not to touch the Church. The word of God says "Do not touch My anointed ones" (1 Chronicles 16:22). Not touching God's anointed ones includes not placing churches under surveillance.
