The following is the "Letter to the Editor" sent to The Albany Herald Newspaper regarding the selection of Dr. Joshua Murfree as the only finalist for the position of Dougherty County School Superintendent in Albany, Georgia. The commentary was printed in the Saturday, January 30, 2010 edition of The Albany Herald.

It has been said, "If one continues to do what has always been done, don't expect different results". Concerning the selection of a new DCSS Superintendent, at least five School Board members are willing to "think outside the box". After hearing the Georgia School Board Association's recommendation, five School Board members decided to take a different approach regarding the selection of a superintendent. Is it a crime for those board members to choose a path different from the one selected for them by the Georgia School Board Association? Was the School Board bound by the Georgia School Board Association recommendation?
Within the DCSS there are paraprofessionals, teachers, principals and assistant superintendents trained in secondary education. Having a superintendent whose professional experience is in post secondary education offers the DCSS someone whose perspective on education will be slightly different from the other educators working in the system. This different perspective could be "just what the doctor ordered" to help the secondary educators continue to reduce the drop out rate and prepare more students for college.
The School Board members who are considering Dr. Murfree should be applauded for their willingness to exercise independent thought. We have seen what the "status quo" can produce. Maybe having a DCSS Superintendent with different experience as an educator and a different perspective on secondary education will produce different and better results. Let's follow through and see.
