Criticism of the Obamas' Date Night in NYC is Unjustified

In a May 31, 2009 article on news.aol.com titled "Obamas Do Dinner, Broadway in NYC", the article's author reported criticism by the RNC of the Obamas' May 30, 2009 "Date Night" trip to New York City. The nation's first couple was criticized for traveling to New York City for "an evening out" during a time that General Motors is preparing for bankruptcy. Such criticism is totally unjustified and unfair.

The problems that General Motors is experiencing is not President Obama's fault. Even if he had lost the November 2008 election, General Motors would still be in trouble. There is absolutely no reason for Mr. and Mrs. Obama to put their personal lives on hold just because a major American business icon is on the financial ropes. The truth is life goes on. I went out to eat last week. General Motors was in trouble then. I did not refrain from enjoying myself just because General Motors is in trouble. Why can't the Obamas do the same? The truth is if the Obamas had not gone to New York City, General Motors would still be in trouble. Also, I am sure that theatre and business establishments that the Obamas patronized during their date really appreciated their patronage as well as the free publicity that they received as a result of the Obamas' visit. Would anyone begrudge these businesses making money in this economy? Even if the Obamas' trip to New York City did only a little good for those businesses, that was something good that the Obamas could do in a very personal way to stimulate the economy.

As far the trip to New York being on the taxpayer dime, I am sure the Obamas are required to pay for certain things as residents of the White House. What they are not required to pay for, they earn in service as President and First Lady. The truth is, because of their jobs, they are required to have certain perks. They fly on Air Force One. Because of national security concerns, it is necessary for the President of the United States to use Air Force One. That is not a choice. It is a requirement. It would be more irresponsible for the Obamas' to use a private jet because that jet would not be able to handle the necessary security measures needed. With the President's job being what it is, he is on call 24/7. I do not necessarily have to agree with the President's policies to have respect for the job of being President. I most definitely have respect for the job, regardlesss of who is in office.

So, the bottom line is the President of the United States is entitled to "a night out on the town" with spouse. Maybe that can help the President handle the stress of the job. This sentiment goes for ANY United States President, regardless of political party. If ANY President of the United States wants to show kindness to their spouse, let them. That President has earned the right to do so - without any complaint from anybody.
