Meredith Viera and Al Sharpton on the B Word

On April 12, 2007, Meredith Vieira of the TODAY Show interviewed Rev. Al Sharpton on his reaction to MSNBC discontinuing the airing of the Imus morning show. The manner in which Ms. Vieira challenged Rev. Sharpton concerning lack of protest of the use of the "b word" by African-American rap artists was very disappointing.

While use of such language should be protested until it is discontinued, the Vieira-Sharpton interview was disappointing because of Ms. Vieira's liberal use of the "b word" during her days on ABC's The View. During Ms. Vieira's time on The View, repeated emails were sent to the show, objecting to the liberal use of the "b word" by The View co-hosts, including Ms Vieira. Use of the "b word" when referring to Barbara Walters was especially objected to. Unfortunately, those objections were ineffective in curtailing use of the word by Ms. Vieira and other The View co-hosts. Considering Ms. Vieira's use of such language on a program designed for women and one that can affect young girls who may have seen The View during school breaks, Ms. Vieira was probably not the best person for NBC to use to challenge Rev. Sharpton on the amount of his protests of use of the "b word" by African-American rap artists. Since interviewing Rev. Sharpton, Ms. Vieira has returned to The View as a guest and greeted the current co-hosts by referring to them using the "b word".
