CNN Newsroom Anchor Offends An African-American Voter by Using Contrarian

As an African-American voter, I was greatly offended by a portion of the CNN Newsroom broadcast on October 9, 2008 at 3:00 PM Eastern Time. During the broadcast, the news anchor described three African-American men as contrarian, because they were Republicans voting for John McCain. The reason I consider this offensive is because of the use of the word, contrarian.

The implication is that because one is African-American, one is expected to support Barack Obama for President, simply because he is an African-American. Also, use of the word contrarian, implies disobedience or rebellion. This is the most offensive part. If African-Americans who do not support Barack Obama are disobedient or rebellious, who are they disobedient to? What are they rebellious against? What force, power or entity are African-Americans subservient to that they should be considered contrary with, disobedient to or rebellious against? Are African-Americans still slaves in the United States of America? Does this CNN Newsroom Anchor see African-Americans as slave to something or someone with no right to independent thought? Who is the slave master of such African-Americans? Does this CNN Newsroom anchor believe in slavery? Does this anchor believe African-Americans should be political slaves?

As a voter, I have chosen not to support Barack Obama for several reasons which will not be mentioned here. However, one thing should be noted. During the 2008 Democratic Primary, Barack Obama made a statement to the effect that he could get the votes of Hillary Clinton supporters, but she could not necessarily get the votes of his supporters. I was a Hillary Clinton supporter who voted for her during the Primary. Barack Obama's statement greatly offended me because it took for granted my vote. I did not vote for Hillary because I am Democrat. I am not a Democrat. The Democrats got my vote during the Primary because of Hillary. I am a Republican who thought Hillary was the best candidate for the job of President of the United States. After Hillary endorsed Barack Obama, I chose to vote for John McCain. The decision was easy. In my opinion, between Barack Obama and John McCain, John McCain is the best person for the job. My decision had nothing to do with Sarah Palin being placed on the Republican ticket (she had not yet been announced as McCain's running mate). However, after Senator McCain announced her as his running mate, it was nice to be able to vote for a woman.

Barack Obama's remarks concerning getting Hillary Clinton's votes angered me. The words of the CNN Newsroom anchor also angered me. Having my vote taken for granted is as offensive to me as slavery, segregation, or any manifestation of racial bigotry. Taking my vote for granted is a refusal to recognize my worth as an individual. It is an attempt to treat me as a political commodity - much like Africans were during Slavery, when they were considered property to be bought an sold at will. What is the difference between the CNN Newsroom anchor using the word contrarian and use of the word n----r? Political freedom rocks!
